Many, if not most, owners of micro or mini businesses just rely on their own personal auto insurance coverage for their car, even if they use that car for business. Well, it is not secret that external linkbacks (or lack of them) will make or break your page ranking efforts. If you cannot get your website off the 20th page, even though you think you did everything right with a search term in your page title, header, etc., then it is probably because you just do not have enough backlinks.

You can refer to this great list of hundreds of high PR Directories which take free submissions. It’s a great effort. I looked at the list, and it made me wish I wasn’t so lazy. I did get through a few dozen before I decided that I needed a better way to do this.

Of course, if you are just starting out, then you will probably have to do a lot of grunt work yourself. That’s how most of us started. But after we got going, we realized that it would make better use of out time to actually produce the content and build websites, and try to save time on submissions.

Working at home is not for everybody. I personally love it, because I find that working in an office is very distracting. I am just to tempted to socialize. Of course, since I run my own business, the pressure of performing is very real in a “hurts in a good way” sort of way. It keeps me busy, and the clutter in my house or drone of a TV kept on for noise do not really keep me from completing projects. And of course, since I am the boss of me, I decide what tasks I should be performing. It’s not that I never have to do anything I don’t like to do, but I do think that my tasks are important.

However, I do know a lot of people who tried to work at home and ended up going back to the office because they just could not get work done this way. They found tasks around the house distracting, and I guess, aren’t distracted at all by coffee room chatter in an office. They enjoy the routine of going to an office and having a set schedule and work to perform.

So I put the whole thing down to personality and work style, but Yahoo Hot Jobs disagrees with me. They listed 5 skills they think are essential for work at home success. See, I think it’s more personality and drive, and they think it comes down to skills. What do you think? Comment Please!

• Entrepreneurship - ok, maybe that’s the personality thing.
• Tax Planning - Well, maybe, but you can hire some of that too.
• Public Relations and Marketing - I agree that most home businesses require some degree of ability to market and/or network. However, different businesses require different skills. My friend who is a successful insurance agent networks in a very different way then I do.
• E-Commerce: Again, that skill is essential for me, but doesn’t seem to be a driving force of my insurance agent friend’s business.
• Project Management - I agree that time needs to be managed. But again, different businesses require different levels of this skill. My strength is to be as efficient as possible, so I can reward myself with a few personal phone calls every day. I guess those are my substitute for the office coffee room.

If you have ever worked at home, either with a home business or telecommuter, what do you think the most important skills or personality traits are to make somebody able to do it alone. I guess I’d also add an ability to work alone, and to stand being alone. Some people feel lonely without the company of coworkers. While I like to chat as much as anybody, I seem to be more productive on my own.
