With rising unemployment comes a lot more people looking for work, and of course, a lot of people are turning to internet job boards because they believe it is a safe, simple, and productive way to find a job. Well, I have known people who were invited for legitimate interviews and found jobs on the big job boards, but I also know that getting a resume noticed is very tough these days.

But now you also need to beware of job postings that do not really offer jobs, but instead are anything from misleading to outright scams. You have probably seen the so-called job postings that are thinly disguised ads for the latest MLM or home business opportunity, and believe it or not, those ads are probably the best of a bad lot!

Beware of any employment offer that requires you to send money, and of course, any that ask you for personal information like a social security number! Of course, when you actually fill out your employment application at a legitimate employer, you may need to give them your ssn, but you should never give one out through an email or over the phone for a company that you are not absolutely sure is legitimate!

You can prepare for unemployment. A bit of preparation can turn a time off work into an opportunity instead of a crisis. We are seeing people lose their jobs, and then lose their good credit and homes. But others are lucky enough to be able to start their own business or find a better job, and say they were better off being forced to move out of their old comfort zone.

Of course, paying down debt, having some savings to cover expenses, and keeping your network and skills up to date are important things to do to prepare for a job loss. It is also to prepare yourself emotionallyf. Some people have their entire social lives at work, as well as their financial lives. Most of the time layoffs are anything but personal. So think about what friends you have, and who you would call, if you suddenly found the office door locked!

Now we have discussed freelancing as another way to earn income online, and also directed you to some professional freelancers. However many people think that freelance jobs, like freelance writing or programming, are just a way to make some extra money waiting for a ship to come in. But now it appears that freelance writing can be the ship!

Let me be clear. This individual finished a lot of projects and worked at a pace, that even he says, would be hard to keep up over the long term. $10,000 does not come without work. But it can be done. Can you do it?

So what webhost do we think treats newbie and veteran webmasters right?

Many, if not most, owners of micro or mini businesses just rely on their own personal auto insurance coverage for their car, even if they use that car for business. However, you really should examine the limits of a personal car insurance policy. Many of us bought car insurance years ago and, honestly, cannot remember what we specified when we took out the policy.

However, if you use your car for business, and especially if you let other employees use that car, your personal coverage may not be enough. You really should look into the need for commercial car insurance, or at least into adding a business rider onto your personal policy.

If you are out looking for social site backlinks, look at this article: Ultimate DoFollow Social Site List.

Well, it is not secret that external linkbacks (or lack of them) will make or break your page ranking efforts. If you cannot get your website off the 20th page, even though you think you did everything right with a search term in your page title, header, etc., then it is probably because you just do not have enough backlinks.

You can refer to this great list of hundreds of high PR Directories which take free submissions. It’s a great effort. I looked at the list, and it made me wish I wasn’t so lazy. I did get through a few dozen before I decided that I needed a better way to do this.

Of course, if you are just starting out, then you will probably have to do a lot of grunt work yourself. That’s how most of us started. But after we got going, we realized that it would make better use of out time to actually produce the content and build websites, and try to save time on submissions.

Can Your Small Business Compete?

One of the large problems that small business faces is the ability to compete with large companies when buying supplies and inventory. Everything, from small business website development to obtaining discounts on office supplies seems harder and more expensive on a small scale. Providers bend over backwards to service large accounts, but they do not always give small businesses, especially start up companies, the same consideration.

Business associations can help. One association is Americas Best Companies. You will be able to display the logo on your website or brick and mortar building, and know that you are joining a large association of small businesses, plus lend credibility to your own business. In fact, you will be able to have a website up and running for your own company within minutes of joining! America’s Best Companies will also make sure that website can be found by linking ot your website from its own popular member directory!

But more then that, you will join an association which can save you thousands of dollars on the things you need to run your business. They have group deals with large office supply companies, insurance companies, shipping, fuel, and much more!

Get more information here >>> Small Business Discounts.

Are You Cut Out To Work At Home?

Working at home is not for everybody. I personally love it, because I find that working in an office is very distracting. I am just to tempted to socialize. Of course, since I run my own business, the pressure of performing is very real in a “hurts in a good way” sort of way. It keeps me busy, and the clutter in my house or drone of a TV kept on for noise do not really keep me from completing projects. And of course, since I am the boss of me, I decide what tasks I should be performing. It’s not that I never have to do anything I don’t like to do, but I do think that my tasks are important.

However, I do know a lot of people who tried to work at home and ended up going back to the office because they just could not get work done this way. They found tasks around the house distracting, and I guess, aren’t distracted at all by coffee room chatter in an office. They enjoy the routine of going to an office and having a set schedule and work to perform.

So I put the whole thing down to personality and work style, but Yahoo Hot Jobs disagrees with me. They listed 5 skills they think are essential for work at home success. See, I think it’s more personality and drive, and they think it comes down to skills. What do you think? Comment Please!

What Yahoo says:

Entrepreneurship - ok, maybe that’s the personality thing.

Tax Planning - Well, maybe, but you can hire some of that too.

Public Relations and Marketing - I agree that most home businesses require some degree of ability to market and/or network. However, different businesses require different skills. My friend who is a successful insurance agent networks in a very different way then I do.

E-Commerce: Again, that skill is essential for me, but doesn’t seem to be a driving force of my insurance agent friend’s business.

Project Management - I agree that time needs to be managed. But again, different businesses require different levels of this skill. My strength is to be as efficient as possible, so I can reward myself with a few personal phone calls every day. I guess those are my substitute for the office coffee room.

If you have ever worked at home, either with a home business or telecommuter, what do you think the most important skills or personality traits are to make somebody able to do it alone. I guess I’d also add an ability to work alone, and to stand being alone. Some people feel lonely without the company of coworkers. While I like to chat as much as anybody, I seem to be more productive on my own.
