Working in the Bay of E Commerce

I am pretty sure that if there is one way that most people who run an online home business got an introduction to making money online, it has to be EBay. The beauty of EBay is that is already has the most important part of the online selling equation, and that is traffic. Millions of people shop at EBay by searching or browsing for things they want. EBay also has tools to get started, and even offers sellers the reports of which items are selling well. For a motivated person, EBay is almost a no-lose location for EBusiness.

Now this is not to say you don’t have to be careful. Not every item will sell. If you don’t manage your auctions well, some items could sell at a loss. EBay will charge you a fee to sell items, but compared to renting space in the real world, it is still a good deal for most sellers. If you decide to sell on EBay you must learn how to manage your auctions, set minimum bids, and keep all of your costs in mind. You have to learn to work an online auction site, but you do not have to worry about bringing visitors to the site!

Sell That Old Stamp Collection or Designer Dress You Wore Twice

Many people start out by selling something they already have on the most popular online auction site, get inspired to clean out every closet that way, and then run out of things to sell in their own homes. Then they have to begin the business of finding sources of inventory. Some people comb auctions or garage sales for items they can buy cheaply and then flip. Others move into buying wholesale lots or dropshipping sources.

Use Online Auctions to Supplement Your Physical Store

Others already have a brick and mortar store, and they use EBay to supplement that business. When my own parent’s ran a small store in a business district that was getting very slow after Wal-mart threw all of the traffic to the other side of their small town, we realized that with EBay we could extend our own “street” to the entire US using EBay as a giant show window.  It was very attractive to post inventory online, get paid with paypal, and then just do shipments. They had mailed out orders to customers for years, usually people in the same state who had stopped by once or twice before, and then just sent a letter asking them if they could send another few yards of some fabric they usually stocked.

Other businesses are already in thriving locations, and want to use a nationally known name to leverage more business so they can grow. Visitors to EBay may already be looking for the brand names they carry, or already familiar with their local store, but find it very convenient to browse online. Some retailers can expand their inventory by selling items online that they do not have display space for in their own store.

Of course, the next step for some EBay sellers is to produce and promote their own websites. Some affiliate marketers or e-commerce website owners branch out to using their own websites, and leave EBay behind. Some still use online auctions to supplement their business and make new customers aware of their website. And some never leave the large online auction site, but set up their own internal shop there.

If you do not have any online experience, and you have heard about making money on the net, I do believe that EBay, or other internet auction sites, will be a great place to get introduce to the wonders of online selling!
